World Travel 2013-2014, Waffles, frites and hearty stews, tackling Belgian Food

We were only in Belgium for a very short time, and because of that we were only able to try out a few dishes – and here they are!

First up of course has to be the waffles. Waffles are a bit different in Belgium as they have a sugar mixed into the batter which makes them have a sweet crust. Normally, Belgians would just eat these style of waffles plain, but of course we had to have the cream with it – delicious! This particular waffle was only about 2.5 euro as well.

Lunch in Brugge

As we didn’t have a lot of time in Belgium, we decided to treat ourselves to a nice meal out while we were day tripping in Brugge. There was a restaurant recommended on our map which serves authentic Flemish cuisine and also provides discounts to customers based on their income, so even those without much money can enjoy a meal out every so often.

I chose the Flemish Stew, which of course was served with frites and a salad. It was a delicious meal, and although I personally felt like at times the stew was maybe slightly too salty it wasn’t as over seasoned as other dishes I’ve eaten (plus the stew gravy was really nice on the frites).

Takeshi decided to try the special of the day, which was basically a roast with vegetables. The potatoes were particularly good on this dish, and the sauce was rather sweet which was a big contrast after eating the more salty stew gravy.

Final Meal in Belgium

For our final lunch in Belgium before beginning our transit to the Netherlands we stopped by HEMA (kind of like the IKEA of Belgium I guess) and picked up a dish called Stamppot Boerenkool (kale) with Rookworst. Basically it’s a mashed potato with kale mixed through served with a sausage and gravy. The food quality at HEMA isn’t five star restaurant quality, but it’s rather yummy and affordable option to try out some Dutch dishes
