Hiking St Mary Peak in the Flinders Ranges
A long day today… an extremely long day…
We spent the day hiking St Mary Peak which was an extremely long hike of nearly 8 hours return offering the highest view point in the area. The name in Aboriginal, Ngarri Mudlanha, means dizzy thoughts or confusion which seemed oddly appropriate after hiking to the top. The views were incredible though, but I wouldn’t recommend this hike unless you’re prepared.
Ikara, or Wilpena Pound can be seen from the top of St Mary Peak. According to the local Dreaming story, St Mark Peak is the head of one of two Akurra (dreaming serpents) that had surrounded a ceremony taking place in the area with their bodies forming the sides of Wilpena Pound.
