Monkeys, lizards and other creatures too

Well, here it is – the first proper blog post!

These images were taken way back in November 2011 when my partner and I took a trip to Adelaide Zoo. It was a great opportunity to not only see the animals, but to also test out the new Nikon D7000. All of the photos were taken with automatic settings on the Nikon, as the genius idea at the time was to not review any of the settings and features prior to zoo (very smart indeed). I did begin experimenting with manual focusing (not a good idea to try for the first time on fast moving targets like monkeys), which was an experience to say the least.

I think this trip was a good indication that I will need to focus on certain aspects of the camera first before moving fully manual as it took quite a while before I was ‘soft’ enough on the focusing to not overshoot too far and end up with a blurry photo. There were plenty of duds, but by the end of the day I’d gradually improved and I’m getting a better idea of what the a sharp image should potentially look like in the viewfinder.

Monkeys and birds were by far my biggest challenge for the day as they move incredibly quickly. Hyperactive would be an understatement. My sluggish fingers were unable to keep up with the manual focusing, so unfortunately for a large number of the shots I relied on the automatic focusing to try to catch the action as it was way more capable then my manual focusing attempts.
