- Overall what we did: 5 (and a bit) days spent in Kuala Lumpur from 14 November to 19 November 2013
- Favourite part of Kuala Lumpur: How easy (and cheap) it was to get around KL – much easier than I expected and the trains and free buses (green and purple line around the city) were great
- Key tip: Think the guide books are kidding when they mention to watch out for un-crossable 6 lane highways and large holes in the ground? Think again! We managed to find both of these with a few hours of being in KL – just watch your step
- Cultural points:
- Religion: Malaysia is predominately Muslim. Ensure you carry a scarf with you if you plan on visiting mosques and cover up appropriately
- Traffic: While it may appear chaotic, things run pretty smoothly and most drivers are considerate to pedestrians when there is large amounts of water at the side of the road
- Highlights: Drinking Teh Tarik in Chinatown behind the main street, and eating Roti Bakar with kaya and butter (mmm)
- Best Experience: Wandering through KL Bird Park, only to have the downpour occur minutes after we had finished while we were still under cover. Perfect timing!
- Worst Experience: Getting stuck in a torrential downpour without the dry bag for the electronics. Didn’t make that mistake twice.
- Must See Attraction: KL Bird Park, viewing the city from the KL Tower and visiting the Petronas Towers would have to be at the top of the list if you’re visiting KL
- Most Over-hyped Attraction: Most likely Batu Caves. It’s a beautiful spot to visit and is worth going to, but it is heavily commercialised (like Lantau Island in Hong Kong) which is something to keep in mind
- Would I go back? Yes, it would be great to come back to Malaysia and see some other spots that we didn’t get to like Penang and Mt Kinabalu
