World Travel 2013-2014, Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto

Today was a slower day as I was still recovering from my illness. We decided to stop by Bulguksa Temple and the Seokguram Grotto as these are two of the key sites to see when visiting Gyeong-ju.

The temple grounds are rather beautiful, and we had a nice time wandering around with the other visitors before heading back down the hill to fetch some lunch. Although the food was more expensive then in town (to be expected being next to a major tourist spot), the food was rather nice and gave us energy for the walk up to Seokguram Grotto.

We decided to walk the trail up to the grotto, although in hind sight that was probably a bad idea. During good weather it’s probably a pleasant climb, but in the dead of winter when the trail is covered with ice and snow it was difficult going at times. Being sick as well didn’t help and it took us a fair while before we reached the top. We were able to see the grotto before it closed, but we missed the last bus down which resulted in a rather expensive taxi fare down – definitely not something I would recommend other people to repeat! If you’re going, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to catch the final bus.
