World Travel 2013-2014, Netherlands Wrap Up

  • Overall what we did: 5 days split into: 2 days in Rotterdam, 1 day in Delft, 1 day visiting Kinderdijk and Dordrecht, and 1 day in Amsterdam from 12 April 2014 to 16 April 2014.
  • Favourite part of the Netherlands: Visiting Keukenhof flower garden as well as our day trips around the Netherlands. So much fun
  • Key tip: In Amsterdam, be prepared for basic facilities with your hostel (e.g. only a bed and bathroom provided). Bags will not be stored, there will be no kitchen, no kettle and no common room area
  • Cultural points:
    • Breakfast: Be prepared for sugar overload with the ‘traditional’ Dutch breakfast. At the hostels we stayed at which included breakfast there was always the option to have a nutella type spread on your toast… and then cover it with chocolate sprinkles
    • Cash: Ensure you have plenty of cash on you in the Netherlands. A lot of supermarkets and places other than major tourist areas will only accept Dutch Maestro cards (Mastercard and Visa are not accepted). If you attempt to catch the train, you will not be able to use your credit card and you’ll need to pay in cash. Not only that the cash has to be… coins. You’ve been warned!
  • Highlights: Keukenhof! Also seeing the windmills in Kinderdijk would have to be a highlight of our time in the Netherlands
  • Kinderdijk, Netherlands

    Kinderdijk, Netherlands

  • Best Experience: Meeting some lovely people in the hostels and heading out into the countryside on several day trips. The Netherlands was fantastic for day trips and very easy to get around
  • Worst Experience: Amsterdam. Don’t know what more can be said about this place. If I get dizzy, and have incredibly bad headaches just from walking down the street due to all of the marijuana from the coffee shops then it’s not a place I want to visit. Ever. Again
  • Must See Attraction: Definitely Keukenhof if you’re visiting in the right season, and Kinderdijk as well to see those famous windmills
  • Most Over-hyped Attraction: Amsterdam. Not worth visiting in my opinion, and won’t say anymore on that topic
  • Would I go back? Yes and no. I probably wouldn’t go back in a hurry as there is too many other places to see, but if I did go back I would definitely never return to Amsterdam. Can’t say that I liked the city at all, but the rest of the Netherlands is beautiful
