- Overall what we did: 10 days split into: 4 days in Barcelona, 3 days in Madrid and 3 days in Seville from 27 April 2014 to 3 May 2014 and 7 May 2014 to 10 May 2014
- Favourite part of Spain: Ah so many things. The food, the relaxed atmosphere, the colour and festivities of Feria de Abril. I loved all of the places we visited in Spain for different reasons
- Key tip: See more of Spain than just Barcelona or Madrid. Each of the places we visited (Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and Tarifa) had a completely different feel to it.
- Cultural points:
- Language: As with anywhere, try to learn a bit of the local language. It’s always nice when you can say hello and try to order in the local language. Fortunately Takeshi did some Spanish a while back, so we were actually able to communicate a lot better in Spain than other places we’ve visited (and I think that’s part of the reason why Takeshi loved Spain so much…)
- Highlights: Going to the festival with a group from the hostel, trying out as many of the delicious foods we could eat and seeing flamenco dancing
- Best Experience: Everything! Although I have to admit I maybe enjoyed the tapas and 1 euro coffees a bit too much…
- Worst Experience: Having a shellfish allergy! Not so fun having an allergy to shellfish in a country where so many of the dishes contain prawns etc. Would have liked to try more of the food like actual seafood paella 🙁 Alas, it wasn’t meant to be
- Must See Attraction: Sagrada Familia, but I think it’s also good just to wander around the cities and enjoy the different atmosphere each place has to offer in Spain
- Most Over-hyped Attraction: Sagrada Familia. I think if you’re in Spain, and in Barcelona it’s one of those places you have to see, and it is impressive. I just didn’t like the architecture style. To me it looked a bit too messy and more like a child had smooshed different play doh styles of cathedrals into one hodge podge buidling. Maybe it will look better when it’s closer to being completed… one day…
- Would I go back? Absolutely! Takeshi and I were already planning when we could head back to Portugal, and Spain in particular before we had even left the countries 🙂 Would highly recommend visiting Spain to everyone!
