World Travel 2013-2014, Food of Milano

Takeshi and I may have had less than 24 hours in Italy, but we still made the most of it and tried some rather delicious food! First up was some street food picked up outside the Central Train Station (picture above). This one was rather interesting as it was a bread, with cheese, tomato and tuna on top. Not 100% sure about the tuna, but it tasted good and kept us going until we found dinner.

Dinner was of course pasta (when in Italy, you have to eat pasta!). Takeshi opted to go with the gnocchi, and I have to admit I don’t recall if I tried gnocchi while Kate and I were in Italy last year. It was rather good, but it was a bit of a different texture to the dishes we’ve had back in Australia. Maybe the difference is if it’s handmade – not sure, but it tasted good.

I tried out the salmon tagliatelle. Yum, can’t say much more about this other than it was just the right amount of sauce, perfectly cooked pasta and of course salmon. How can you go wrong with a dish like this?

After dinner we had to get coffee (caffè latte). I certainly didn’t make the same mistake of ordering a ‘latte’ like the last time I was in Italy. That resulted in getting a jug of milk rather than a cup of coffee with milk (latte is milk in Italian). Whoops. This time, we successfully ordered a coffee with milk and I can’t say much more about it other than it was perfect – no milk required. And doesn’t Takeshi’s cup look like it has an abstract bird in the froth?

Finally, after our delicious dinner of pasta and coffee we couldn’t go past a Grom store which just so happened to be on the street we walked down to dinner. It must have been a sign, as Grom was my favourite gelato store when I was in Italy last year and I couldn’t wait to get Takeshi to try it out (I had been talking about Grom even before we landed in Italy!). I picked the caramel and coconut with chocolate flavours for something a bit different in the ‘small’ or piccolo size. I think the gentleman who served me must have been in a good mood though because my small cone was definitely not a small serving, and probably close to double the size of other customers walking out of the store! Can’t complain about that though, it’s still the best gelato I’ve tasted and I loved eating every bite of it 🙂
