World Travel 2013-2014, Bulgaria Wrap Up
- Overall what we did: 3 days in Sofia from 6 June 2014 to 9 June 2014
- Favourite part of Bulgaria: Being able to relax and just wander around the city
- Key tip: Be careful when crossing the road – cars don’t necessarily stop especially if it’s a taxi
- Cultural points:
- Flowers: If for whatever reason you decide to give flowers, only give them in uneven numbers – even number of flowers are only given at funerals
- Highlights: The incredibly beautiful churches. The frescoes inside were amazing
- Best Experience: The super kind lady who bought us a bread on our very first day in Sofia. Very kind of her, and it meant a lot to us as we got to try out one of the local foods as wel as have a lunch ready once we reached our accommodation after our tiring transit
- Worst Experience: None really, unless you count the incredibly horrible transit from Istanbul to Sofia…
- Must See Attraction: Probably the churches. They are very beautiful and worth visiting, although I would say it’s worth visiting some of the smaller ones as well
- Most Over-hyped Attraction: Aleksander Nevski Cathedral. Don’t get me wrong, it is pretty and rather impressive; however, in comparison to some of the other smaller churches that we visited the frescoes are in a lot worse condition
- Would I go back? Hmm, yes and no. I think it would be nice to go back and experience more of the country and I didn’t have a bad time in Bulgaria. The problem is just getting to Europe from Australia. Unless you have a lot of time available to really travel around Europe some of the Eastern European countries would probably end up being a lower priority than the more well known Western European countries
