World Travel 2013-2014, Deserted Geneva
We had a bit of time before our flight left at nearly 7pm in the evening, so we left Chamonix, France earlier in the day and headed into Geneva. It was easy to get into the city centre from Geneva airport by train; however, we found out when we got there that everything was shut on a Sunday. The city centre had very little people around, and even the cafes were closed!
Another thing we didn’t realise, along with everything being closed was just how much more expensive Switzerland was even in comparison to France. We thought we’d pick up some food while we were in Switzerland so we didn’t have to carry the food around, but woah. I think it was probably the most expensive sandwich I’ve eaten in my life!
And here’s a picture of Takeshi’s tuna salad from the supermarket. 6.7 francs for the tuna salad (that’s $8.2 AUD!) and 6.9 ($8.5 AUD) for the sandwich. Ouch. Good thing we spent less than a day in Switzerland…
Switzerland mustn’t have a Sunday cafe culture like Australia. We were able to wander around a bit and check out the fountain as well as some of the buildings around the city centre before heading back to the airport.
