World Travel 2013-2014, Portugal Wrap Up

  • Overall what we did: 3 days split into: 3 days in Lisbon (with a few hour visit to Belem) from 4 May 2014 to 6 May 2014
  • Favourite part of Portugal: Wandering through the winding back streets of Lisbon
  • Key tip: Keep an eye out for a small local restaurant. The food quality is amazing, and the prices are very low for the amount of food you get. Soup is generally around 1.5 euro, desserts from 1.5 to 2 euro and mains from 4 to 8 euro depending on the dish
  • Cultural points:
    • Language: Make sure you don’t speak Spanish while you’re in Portugal. We found this a bit hard as we had just come from Spain and the languages sound similar to my untrained ears… but best not to insult anyone if you can avoid it!
  • Highlights: Having around 60 young ladies and gentlemen suddenly kneel in front of us and start singing a Portuguese love song. Very memorable and unexpected – we were just watching their singing ‘call and response’ to each other across the road and didn’t expect to have them sing to us
  • Best Experience: The food, atmosphere and just relaxing and slowly wandering around. We had a very slow and relaxing time in Portugal which was really nice
  • Worst Experience: Watching two men approach Takeshi and thinking he was about to be mugged. Turns out they just wanted to sell him drugs (for some reason there were a lot of dealers in certain areas of Lisbon), but it wasn’t a great experience.
  • Must See Attraction: Definitely the sights in Belem, but I also think the Praca do Comercio area is nice to visit as well as the streets in Lisbon not far from the water.
  • Praca do Comercio, Lisbon, Portugal

  • Most Over-hyped Attraction: Hard to say as we were only in Portugal for a very brief time, and we only visited the one city.
  • Would I go back? Absolutely. I think once our travels for this year are over, Takeshi and I will definitely head back to Spain and Portugal to relax and explore the countries further.
