World Travel 2013-2014, Spanish Desserts
Well, so much for laying off the desserts a bit after France. That idea didn’t last more than about 5 minutes I think. Maybe I will be able to succeed in the next country we visit instead.
Farton
Might not be completely considered a dessert as it’s eaten for breakfast, but I consider it more of a dessert than a savoury food. Fartons are a bit like a croissant but in stick form, covered in icing sugar. They are super cheap (5 for 1 euro) and make a good snack when you’re wandering around. Not a strong flavour obviously as they are just like a normal croissant but I rather enjoy them.
Cost: 5 for 1 euro

Chocolate Churros
Seeing as we were in Spain, we had to try the churros while we were here. Unfortunately neither of us particularly liked them. They were very oily and tasted a bit stale to me. Maybe they would have been better if we had tried them somewhere else but I don’t think we’ll try them again.
Cost: Anywhere from 3 to 4.5 euro depending on the store

Canyan
We decided to give these a try as a snack while walking around in Barcelona. The bakery we got these from had three different flavours which were basically a chocolate, custard and jam type filled pastry. The custard in particular was delicious and they made a great snack on the go.
Cost: 3 for 1.5 euro

Donuts
Mmm, donuts. These were amazing. They might not look like much, but they were super soft and fluffy on the inside. I wasn’t as fond of the chocolate one as the flavour was a bit strong, but the sugar coated one was amazing.
Cost: 2 euro each along with a coffee

Caramel Churro
We did end up trying churros again, but this time we tried a jumbo version which was (well I thought) topped with caramel. Turns out the caramel ran through the centre of the churros. The churros itself didn’t taste that great, but the caramel tasted delicious!
Cost: 2.5 euro for one

Crema Catalan
Similar to a creme brulee, the catalan cream has a very different flavour to a creme brulee. It’s hard to explain, but the sugar topping is very sweet and strong in flavour in comparison to the soft custard. It was lovely, but probably prefer the more delicate cream flavour of a creme brulee.
Cost: 4.25 euro

Xuxo de Creama
This one is basically a sugar coated pastry filled with a cream/custard filling. Personally I didn’t think it was that exciting. Takeshi thought it was alright though which was good.
Cost: 1.9 euro

Chocolate Triangulos
A chocolate croissant type pastry in the shape of a triangle. We picked these up to munch on our transit day to Lisbon as we needed something for the bus. They were really nice, and went great with coffee!
Cost: I think about 1.5 euro for the 3
