World Travel 2013-2014, Street Food in South Korea

Today’s post will be sharing some of the street food we have tried out during our time here in South Korea so far.

As you can see in the featured image, as we’re here in South Korea during winter there was one street food in particular that I was on the hunt for as I had heard it is only available during this season. Hottduk, is a pancake type batter wrapped around a centre of brown sugar and nuts. It’s deep fried and then served piping hot causing the sugar inside to melt. This was very yummy, cheap (1,000 won or about $1 AUD) and easy to find in Seoul; however, if you do choose to eat it be aware that the contents are super duper hot. I may or may not have burnt my tongue on this one… Painful, but delicious (and there are savoury versions sold by some vendors).

This next one was a bit of a whoops moment, and a lesson learnt to pick up a bit of the written language before arriving in a country. We decided to try out what looked like a pancake filled with lovely greenery, but it wasn’t until it started to be cut open that we found out it was filled with octopus… and I can’t eat octopus. Ah well, Takeshi got to enjoy all of the octopus chunks!

The final yummy breakfast option we found in Seoul that I have some pictures of to share with you was this egg sandwich. It was a bit interesting as the toast is cooked on the same cooking surface with the eggs, they’re assembled and sugar is added to the top of the egg as well as tomato and mustard sauce. I wasn’t sure about the sugar initially but it actually tasted quite nice, and was pretty cheap at 1,500 won (about $1.5 AUD). It also comes in a handy cup which has a cut in the side so that you can tear the cup away as you eat, helping you keep your hands nice and clean.
