World Travel 2013-2014, United Kingdom Wrap Up
- Overall what we did: 28 days split into: 21 days in London (Takeshi was working for a portion of this time), 1.5 days in Edinburgh, 3.5 days in Inverness, 1 day in Glasgow and 1 day in Belfast from 10 March 2014 to 8 April 2014.
- Favourite part of the United Kingdom: Hmm, this is a hard one. Actually, no it’s not! Staying with friends while we were in London would have to be my absolute favourite part of the UK. It was a lot of fun to be able to go out on the weekend with Andre and Yun and see the London they know, play board games, as well as cook for them and enjoy a nice warm fluffy bed and hot shower. After the very uncomfortable Nepal beds and not being able to cook for a while, it was heaven!
- Key tip: No major tips here, if you’re familiar with Australian customs, it’s pretty similar
- Cultural points:
- Cleanliness: Littering and spitting on the street are rather common (much more so than I expected). There I was thinking I wouldn’t have to dodge people spitting anymore, but don’t be surprised if they do here
- Highlights: There were some good and bad bits about the UK, but would have to say seeing Stonehenge and visiting some of the amazing museums would be highlights. The museums are absolutely incredible, and it’s amazing to think that they are free entry!
- Best Experience: Our weekend trips to the markets with Andre and Yun, and also our day trip with Andre out to Stonehenge – a lot of fun being able to share these experiences with friends
- Worst Experience: I can’t lie. Unfortunately, the worst experience hands down has to be some of the food (*cough* Glasgow I’m looking at you) which was absolutely terrible
- Must See Attraction: British Museum and Stonehenge. Can’t go to the UK and not visit the British Museum – it’s incredible and you could spend a whole week just wandering through this museum alone
- Most Over-hyped Attraction: … Stonehenge. Don’t get me wrong, it’s beautiful and worth visiting but I don’t think it’s worth a 15 pound entry per adult (ouch). Definitely go see it, you’ll regret it if you don’t – but I felt I could still enjoy the sight even just driving by
- Would I go back? Yes and no. I enjoyed the UK and would love to go around Scotland and Northern Ireland again, but next time we would do it as a road trip in a caravan or car so that we could see more of the countryside. The UK is rather similar to Australia though, so unless we were going on a road trip, I would probably visit some other countries first before heading back to the UK
